About Matthew Dunn
At 16 years of age Matthew began his racing life in the stables of Dave Sweeney at Warwick Farm where he was apprenticed and hopeful of making use of his light frame to become a jockey. During a much travelled but short career in the saddle, Matthew found the fire and obsession for horse training, and in 1994 he took out a trainer’s licence with several horses at Port Macquarie.
That start soon lead to a move to the Gold Coast where he trained a small team with good success. This stint at the Gold Coast saw a friendship with Gerald Ryan develop, that soon turned into an offer to move to Sydney to become a foreman and run Gerald’s Rosehill stable with horses like SNITZEL, CLANGALANG and RECURRING. This is where he sharpened his eye and his knowledge, not just to the craft of training good horses but in what it takes to manage a stable.
In 2012 the Murwillumbah stable came to life and Matthew’s experience running the stable at Rosehill made the transition back to training his own team easy. From just a few horses, the stable quickly grew to where he is now running a busy 80-horse stable that in any given week will have runners in Sydney, (where he has trained 84 metropolitan winners), to the Sunshine Coast and any number of tracks in between.
